Young worker wrongly demoted

As a young worker, Liam* (19) was excited to accept a promotion from his fast food employer. He’d worked hard to secure his new position of assistant manager and was enjoying the extra responsibility and pay that came with the role.

However, after only three weeks and without warning, Liam was told that someone else would be taking over as assistant manager. Liam’s manager explained that his replacement was being transferred into their store and that he would have to return to his previous position.

Confused and frustrated with the situation Liam contacted the SDA for advice and support.

Liam told his SDA official that during his three weeks as assistant manager he’d had no issues and had signed a contract that entitled him to that position.

With this information, Liam and the SDA sat down with the store’s manager and successfully got his assistant manager position reinstated.

Liam was thrilled with this outcome and was very grateful to have the SDA’s assistance, especially as a young worker who could sometimes feel taken advantage of.

Changing a contract (i.e. changing a worker’s job position) without the workers consent is unlawful. If you find yourself in this situation, please call the office for help and advice on 1300 SDA HELP (1300 732 4357).
