Diverse workplaces are the best workplaces.
This is definitely the case when it comes to our young member, Joseph from Belmont.
Joseph began working at his fast food store in 2015 as a casual. He is an enthusiastic and reliable worker, however he has faced a number of challenges in the workplace due to an ongoing disability.
One challenge being his journey to convert from casual to permanent part-time. To make this happen Joseph organised several meetings with his manager and with the support of his union representative and parents formed a casual conversion plan which included completing specified training.
After successfully completing the required training, Joseph secured his goal of permanent employment.
Joseph is very happy with this result and like all people with a disability, knows his ability far outweighs any impairments.
In fact, research shows that there are many benefits for employing people with disabilities such as reliability, productivity, ability to create strong connections with customers and loyalty.
