Member Win: Jack's Story
Published on: Sep 27 2016
You’re working full-time in a job you enjoy and your boss approaches you one day and directs you to go part-time. What would you do?
That’s the dilemma which faced Jack last week.
Jack is a 20 year old fast food worker who has worked full-time for the last 2 years. He combined two roles to make up his full-time job. He was both a special kitchen hand and performed some maintenance work on the side.
When his employer decided that Jack was no longer required to do the maintenance work, his manager instructed him to drop his hours to part-time.
Thankfully Jack was a union member because when two Officials recently visited his workplace Jack shared his story and they were able to fix the issue immediately.
With the intervention of the Officials and the full cooperation of the fast food chain’s head office, Jack was immediately reinstated to full-time work and back paid for lost wages.
The cut in his contract had only occurred the week before so Jack’s financial loss, including superannuation, was only just over $200 but if it had continued, without the assistance of the SDA, his loss would have amounted to more than $10,000 over the next 12 months.
Unfortunately Jack’s problem is not uncommon. Many young workers are unaware of their rights. If you are a permanent employee and your hours are cut, don’t wait. Speak to your delegate or call the Union for advice immediately.
Jack wanted to share his story and remind fast food workers why it is important to belong to their union, the SDA: “I want to let people know you are out there doing good work.”
