KEEP A FILE!
The Union regularly assists members with issues in their workplaces. It might be that members are being underpaid or are unsure of their rights and come to us for help. Often we may require payslips, rosters, contracts of employment or other related documents that assist us in giving you advice or resolving your issue.
Unfortunately on many occasions we find that members don’t have copies of their paperwork such as payslips, employment contracts or rosters. It can cause a lot of stress and inconvenience for members as they hunt around trying to find them. Personnel files are often locked up by management and there might be a significant delay in obtaining copies whilst you wait to cross paths with management. There is a way to make things easier though!
Start a file today!
We ask that you start a personal work file and put in it, any documents related to your employment. Please keep copies of your payslips so that we can investigate any potential pay issues. Please keep copies of any employment contracts and also new rosters (this helps particularly when the company or employer is continuously making changes). If your employer asks you to sign something ask for a copy of it so that you can keep it in your file. You may rely on the document later.
There are also plenty of benefits to saving your payslips. Many members don’t check their payslips and often underpayments may go on for months or sometimes even years! If you are regularly looking at them and saving them then you are more likely to come across errors which can be swiftly recovered. Better that the money is in your account earning interest rather than sitting in someone else’s.
A few minutes each week may save you hours in the long run!
