Injuries Outside The Workplace
Have you ever broken or fractured a bone or sustained other injuries at home; playing sports, out and about with family and friends or on holidays?
Accidents can happen anytime. Depending on the type of injury you suffer, you may not be able to return to work for sometime. What if you did not have any sick leave or other leave to fall back on? What if you had no Private Health Insurance? How would you cope with the cost of living, paying bills, providing food, shelter and clothing for yourself and family?
All financial members of the SDA are covered with the Union's Free Accident Insurance Scheme. You are covered 24/7 - Workers' Compensation during work hours and the Union's insurance cover outside of work hours. SDA members aged up to 80 are covered by the policy, even on holidays overseas (subject to sanction exclusions), irrespective of where the accident occurs.
The SDA's Accident Insurance cover you in the event of
- Total incapacity to work in the job you were trained and/or educated to perform
- The need for knee reconstruction or arthroscopy
- Breaking of bones
- Loss of sight, hearing or limbs
- The complete or partial tear of Achilles' tendon
- Ambulance costs associated with injury from an accident
- Plus much more - contact our office for a full listing of injuries.
These injuries need to be caused by violent, external and visible means outside working hours and not attributable to an illness.
This insurance policy covers you for a range of injuries e.g $300 for a broken thumb, finger or toe all the way up to $45,000. New to the Scheme is a $30,000 educational supplement for dependent children and up to $3,000 funeral benefit fund.
If you had to insure yourself with a similar type of policy, it would cost you $690 each year. The buying power of more than 220,000 SDA members nationally enables the Union to cover you for free.
To claim, just call the SDA office within 30 days of your accident. All claims must be submitted with a doctors certificate. Please note, not all accidents are covered by this policy. Full terms and conditions of the policy are available for inspection at the Union office.
The SDA also has a Mortality Fund Benefit which is paid upon death of a member/honorary member. The amount payable depends on the year of membership as follows;
- 1 - 5 years = $600
- 5 - 10 years = $900
- 10 - 20 years = $ 1,200
- 20 - 30 years = $ 1,800
- 30 - 40 years = $2,400
- 40 years + = $3,000
A benefit is also payable if the member's nominated beneficiary (the person whom they nominated on their membership form) dies. In this case, the member receives half of the applicable amount above.
The SDA is here to help so if you or a member you know has injured themselves outside of work or have passed away or you are not sure if they are entitled to a claim contact our office on 4961 4694.
