Don't want to work Boxing Day?

The festive period is almost upon us, which means that Christmas working rosters are starting to be developed.

If you work in retail, remember - you have the right to say no to working on Boxing Day.

The NSW Government’s changes to the legislation last year mean that shops are officially allowed to trade on December 26th this year, robbing workers of their right to spend Boxing Day with their family and friends.

However, the legislation clearly states that workers have the right to refuse to work on Boxing Day.

This form has two sections – one which clearly asks your manager not to roster you onto work on December 26th; and another which lets the SDA – the union for retail workers – know of your intention. If you’re a member, it’s important to let the union know, so that if you feel coerced into working at any stage, it’s on the record and we can go into bat for you.

If you have any questions or concerns at any stage, don’t hesitate to contact your us on 1300 SDA HELP (1300 732 4357) or via secretary@sdan.org.au.

The festive period is your time to spend with your family and friends. You don’t have to work on Boxing Day.
