Delegates of the Month - December
Meet Scott and Neeka from Woolworths Gosford - our December Delegates of the month!
Scott and Neeka worked hard as a team throughout the recent proposed Woolworths agreement which was rolled out across stores in September & October. Together, they held multiple workplace meetings to discuss the proposed new EBA with their team mates. During this time, they also recruited 20 new members. These two are on fire and we can’t wait to see the changes they can make in their workplace over the next year.
We sat down with them and listened to what they had to say about their roles as Delegates in their workplace. Here's what they had to say:
How long have you been a delegate for?
Scott: Approx. 2.5 years.
Neeka: About 7 months now.
Why did you become a delegate?
Scott: I wanted to ensure my co-workers got a fair go.
Neeka: I wanted to try and strengthen the bond with my co-workers and give them a voice.
What campaigns have you been involved with?
Scott: We have met with Anne Charlton, who is running for the seat of Robertson to voice the issues retail workers face on a daily and weekly basis. I have also been a strong advocate for not working on boxing day and attended the rally in Sydney last year.
Neeka: I feel strongly about the No One Deserves A Serve campaign. I don’t deserve to be abused by customers while I’m doing my job, neither do my co-workers. This is a really important campaign and there is a definite need to educate the public on what is acceptable behaviour when so many of my co-workers are copping it and they shouldn’t be!
What have been some of the challenges?
Scott: Getting people to help me in helping them.
Neeka: The biggest challenge has been when members need help but won’t report it or won’t go to the store manager. We can’t help if you won’t help yourself.
What do you enjoy about being a SDA delegate?
Scott: I love achieving wins and improving people’s quality of life at work.
Neeka: I enjoy meeting new people and learning the right and wrong ways to go about issues within the work place.
What are your goals for next year?
Scott: I want to keep kicking goals.
Neeka: I want to be heard and to work on minimising bullying in store.
