Meet MaryJane O’Dell from Big W Raymond Terrace - our February Delegate of the month
MaryJane is a dedicated delegate who takes pride in her role, especially when she helps the members in her store.
This dedication is evident in the work she is doing to roll out the proposed Big W Agreement. MaryJane has been very active conversing with her store members, providing feedback and learning all about the proposed EA. She also regularly attends training days to increase her knowledge, this allows her to best represent her fellow union members which she finds very rewarding.
As a proud union member, MaryJane recognises the need for unity and strength to bring about change. She plays a vital role in recruiting new members in store, communicating union benefits, and notifying SDA officials of any relevant issues or activities.
We spoke with MaryJane about being a Delegate. Here’s what she had to say:
How long have you been a delegate for?
MaryJane: I’ve been a delegate for 2 years, and a member for 11 years.
Why did you become a delegate?
MaryJane: I became a delegate to help people have a voice and to have a union presence in store. I believe in a fair go for everyone and enjoy helping out my fellow members.
What campaigns have you been involved in?
MaryJane: I’ve been involved with the ‘Change the rules’ and ‘No one deserves a serve’ campaigns and involving members.
What have been some of the challenges?
MaryJane: This is the first new Enterprise Agreement I have done which has its challenges, but I have been working hard to get it right. I’ve been attending training sessions and holding meetings in store.
What do you enjoy about being a delegate?
MaryJane: I have helped fix rostering and annual leave issues which takes some of the stress off the members.
