Delegate of the Month - Jo
Published on: Jul 28 2017
Rising to the challenge is just one of the qualities we recognize in someone when choosing Delegates and Jo has done this in spades over and again this year.
Meet our Delegate of the Month – Jo Murdoch. Jo has worked with Myer for over 19 years. She has been a member of the SDA for 17 years and a Delegate for 2 years.
Jo has had a particularly challenging year with Myer, her store, re-structuring their in-store Administration resulting in redundancies for 3 Permanent team members and transfer of positions for another as well as casuals being transferred to selling floor.
Jo is instrumental in consulting, advising and attending meetings with our members.
We asked Jo what it means to be a successful union delegate.

Why did you become a Delegate?
To help the team members on the selling floor. I wanted to be there to help them. I have always had a strong moral compass and fight for what's fair. I'm not afraid to say it as it is.
What has been your most notable achievement?
Of the issues I have helped resolve, one standout was a meeting with a member who was accused of discrimination. Upon my own investigation, it was found to be 3rd or 4th hand information and inaccurate. I stood my ground and got a great result.
Why is recruitment important?
To keep the union alive and strong. Without the union we are stuffed, employers will walk all over us.
What campaigns are you involved in?
I have supported all the current campaigns but I really enjoyed the Take the Time Boxing Day event at Speers Point Park. I was proud to watch our Branch Secretary Barbara go up in a cherry picker and hang hundreds of Baubles with workers messages from one of the highest trees.
What do you aim to achieve in the next 12 months?
I would like to achieve 100% union membership, but would be happy to grow back to 85% over the next 12 months. I will continue to negotiate with Myer to get rosters put back up on the wall for transparency.
What do you enjoy best in your role as a Delegate?
I really enjoy meeting fellow delegates. I also get to speak with other team member’s who I might not otherwise have interacted with if I wasn't a Delegate. I also enjoy learning about the union itself, the movement’s history and the rights we have won to date.
